The Congress issued a whip for the presence of MPs in the LS on the ONOE Bill

New Delhi: The Congress has issued a whip in the Lower House of the Parliament with the constitution amendment bill to hold the elections of the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha simultaneously. Whips have been issued to Congress Lok Sabha MPs, making their presence in the House mandatory for Tuesday’s “important proceedings”, sources said.

The party’s Lok Sabha MPs also informed that a meeting will be held at 10:30 AM at the office of the Congress Parliamentary Party to discuss Tuesday’s work.

The Constitution Amendment Bill to hold the elections of the House of Representatives and the Provincial Assembly simultaneously has been submitted to the lower house of the Parliament on Tuesday and can be sent to the joint committee of both houses.

The Lok Sabha agenda said the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-second Amendment) Bill, 2024, popularly known as the “One Nation, One Election” Bill, would be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.

After its introduction, Meghwal will request Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the bill to a joint committee of Parliament for wider consultation.
The minister will also introduce the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which seeks to align the elections of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry and the NCT of Delhi.

A joint panel will be formed on a proportional basis based on the number of MPs from different parties. As the single largest party, the BJP will chair the committee apart from several members, an activist said on Monday.
Last week, the Union Cabinet decided to hold elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies simultaneously but left “as is” how local body elections will be conducted. The meeting of the Council of Ministers has approved two bills to hold the elections of the House of Representatives and the Provincial Assembly simultaneously.
