At least five militants were killed and two Indian Army jawans were injured in a gunfight at an orchard in south Kashmir’s Kulgam on Thursday.
Jammu and Kashmir Police said they have found the bodies of five militants, but they have not been able to locate them, and their identities can only be ascertained later.
Officials said a joint team of JK Police and Army cordoned off Kaddar village in south Kashmir’s Kulgam after receiving information about the presence of terrorists in the area. Police said that while they were zeroing in on the target, the hidden militants came out of the house, fired indiscriminately at the troops and tried to breach the security cordon. A joint team of security forces retaliated and the gunfight ensued.
Police sources said they received information about the presence of four to five militants in the village. They said they are yet to find the body of the militant but that it is likely local.
This is the second major shooting in Kulgam this year. On June 8, six militants and two soldiers were killed in two separate gunfights in the district.
