Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee said on Thursday that Donald Trump’s election as US president proved that age is not a factor if one has popular support, amid a debate in his party over calls to fix retirement age for leaders.
Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had called for the introduction of a retirement age in politics, citing a decline in work efficiency and productivity.
‘Age is not a factor in politics, if you can work for the people of the country and if you are able to complete all the work, if you are popular among the people, you can stay in politics,’ said Charpatka. Member of Parliament from Serampore
“Trump won the election at 78,” the 67-year-old added.
A few months before the Lok Sabha elections, the rift within the party reached such a level that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to intervene, dismissing the call for younger members to respect senior leaders and veterans to retire from politics.
The MP declined to comment, hinting at party leader Kunal Ghosh hinting that Abhishek Banerjee could become West Bengal’s next chief minister after Mamata Banerjee.
However, he said, ‘When the party asks me to go, I will leave without getting into any controversy.
