The city recorded its hottest December in 16 years (since 2008) on Wednesday, just days after recording the coldest temperature in eight years. After light rain since Wednesday morning, the temperature rose in many parts of the city.
Attributing the unusual weather event to the arrival of strong easterlies and humidity, senior scientists of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have indicated that Mumbai is likely to experience warm days for the next 3-4 days. , after which the temperature has decreased. to drown
On Wednesday morning, several pockets like Juhu, Bandra, Goregaon as well as the island city woke up to unseasonal rain. As the day wore on, citizens were drenched in high humidity and heat levels at the IMD’s Santacruz observatory at 37.3 degrees Celsius, nearly 4 degrees above normal.
IMD data showed that it was the city’s hottest day in at least 16 years. Earlier in 2008, the hottest day was recorded on December 5, when the maximum temperature reached 37.7 degrees.
This was a sharp rise from last week when the minimum temperature dipped to around 16 degrees for two days including November 29 – the city’s coldest November day in eight years.
The night did not bring relief to the city as Wednesday’s minimum temperature also rose to 25.5 degrees – the hottest December night since 2022.
According to Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai, the delay in the sea breeze is due to the strong easterly lows that have increased the temperature. Nair said, “The sea breeze was very slow as the force of the east wind was very strong. Moreover, there was an anticyclone at 700 MPA. Due to these factors, daytime temperatures increased.”
On the unseasonal rains, meanwhile, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, said they were the effect of Cyclone Fengal. “After the cyclone, there has been a low rise in the Arabian Sea, which has resulted in excess moisture. It has rained in some areas of the region,’ said Kamble.
In its forecast bulletin, the IMD said, barring Mumbai and Thane, the neighboring districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri will continue to receive light rain for the next two days.
Meanwhile, since December 7, the temperature will remain like winter, so the cold will increase in the metropolis for the next 3-4 days.’ The temperature may remain in the range of 35 degrees for the next 2-3 days. Nair added.
Although Wednesday was the hottest December day in the past 16 years, the hottest December day recorded was in 1987 when the maximum temperature reached 39.8 degrees.
