Round-the-clock guards for at least 35 transmission towers near the Statue of Unity in Gujarat: This is the police’s response to quell protests inspired by the iconic scene in Sholay where Dharmendra, as Veeru, climbs into a water tank. And he threatens to kill himself if he doesn’t marry Basanti, played by Hema Malini.
The Kevadia and Garudeshwar areas of Narmada district recently witnessed dramatic scenes with protesters climbing towers to “press their demands”, officials said.
With SOUADTGA (Statue of Unity Area Development and Tourism Governance Authority) at its wits end to deal with such incidents, the police approached for security arrangements.
Besides deploying round-the-clock security personnel, the Narmada district police have also increased patrolling especially in the afternoon to prevent such protesters from creating ruckus by holding the administration hostage, the officials added.
The decision came a few days after a man and a woman from a Narmada-affected village climbed the telecom tower in Kevadia Colony on December 6, demanding to meet the demands of the 2016 flood-affected movement. in time. This incident has surprised the Narmada district administration.
After about five hours, the duo agreed to come down from the tower after Sardar Sarovar Rehabilitation Agency (SSPA) officials assured them that their demands would be conveyed to the government.
