The encounter took place within the jurisdiction of Puranpur Police Station, Pilibhit and joint police teams from Pilibhit and Punjab were involved. Three suspects were reportedly involved in a grenade attack on a police station in Gurdaspur. Meanwhile, on Sunday, two gangsters were arrested, and four magazines and 14 cartridges were recovered when Punjab Police’s counter-intelligence team busted a large gangster module in Pathankot. Punjab DGP confirmed the arrest on Saturday. The arrested persons have been identified as Sunil Kumar alias Ashu, a resident of Rawal in Batala and Dilpreet Singh alias Dil, a resident of Raimal in Batala.

Accused Sunil alias Ashu has a criminal history including cases under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act. He was released on bail from Gurdaspur Jail on 27 February 2024. Yadav said that from the preliminary investigation, the accused received the arms consignment from Ajnala area of ​​Amritsar on the instructions of their handlers and instructed them to deliver it to an unknown party.

Further investigations are underway to trace the source of the weapons and identify additional suspects involved in the network. Sharing details of the operation, AIG CI Pathankot, Sukhminder Singh Mann said that a tip-off was received that accused Sunil Kumar and Dilpreet Singh were in touch with unknown gangsters and had recently received a consignment of arms and ammunition. Based on the information, the team of CI Pathankot laid a trap and seized arms and ammunition from them and arrested both the accused.

He added that efforts are on to track the previous consignments seized and delivered by the accused. An FIR (No. 71 dated 21.12.2024) has been registered under Section 25 and Section 61 (2) of the Arms Act in this regard.
