Rourkela: Two people were killed when a motorcycle was hit by a train while trying to cross the railway tracks despite the closure of a level crossing in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday night at around 9:30 pm near Kalunga when four persons were traveling on three motorcycles.
They crossed the closed barrier with a motorcycle and were hit by an oncoming train. Police said that one of them died on the spot while the other died during treatment at the Rourkela government hospital.
One of the deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Pankaj Sharma from Himachal Pradesh, while the identity of the other deceased has not been revealed, police said.
“We heard that two others were injured in the accident. However, we have not been able to locate and identify them,” said a police officer.
The deceased were working in a private steel factory in Rourkela, he said.
He said that three motorcycles were heavily damaged in the accident.
