Priyanka Gandhi is likely to be in the Joint Committee of Parliament on the ONOE Bill

New Delhi: Congress MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tiwari, Sukhdev Bhagat, and Randeep Surjewala are the party’s likely choices for the joint committee of Parliament that will scrutinize bills for simultaneous elections, sources said on Wednesday. The Trinamool Congress has proposed the names of its Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee and Rajya Sabha member Saket Gokhale to the proposed committee.

Other parties are also in the process of finalizing the names of members in the panel.

After a heated debate on Tuesday, two bills to create a mechanism for conducting simultaneous elections were introduced in the Lok Sabha.

Opposition parties termed the draft laws – the Constitution Amendment Bill and a General Bill – as an attack on the federal structure, a charge denied by the government.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi said the bills were “anti-constitutional” while talking to reporters on the Parliament premises.

“It is against the federalism of our nation. We are opposing the bill,” she said.
