Delhi Police on Sunday said they have identified 175 suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrants from Outer Delhi district during a 12-hour verification drive that began at 6 pm on Saturday.
“Police have stepped up efforts to identify and detain people living without valid documents. As part of the ongoing operation, 175 persons have been identified as suspected illegal Bangladeshi migrants during a massive verification drive in outer Delhi,” said a senior police officer.
“Concerned about the increasing number of irregular migrants, the Outer District Police has launched a series of targeted operations and checks in various areas under its jurisdiction,” the official added.
The city police launched a drive to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrants living in Delhi on December 11, a day after the LG Secretariat ordered action against such persons.
The official further said that special teams including personnel from local police stations, district foreigner cells, and special units have been deployed to conduct house-to-house checks and gather intelligence about suspected illegal immigrants. “These teams are scrutinizing documents and questioning people to verify their legal status.”
“Verification efforts have been extended outside the district, teams have been sent to their places of origin in coordination with the local police to verify the identity of those persons,” he added.
On December 13, police said they had identified more than 1,000 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and arrested two of them. Abdul Ahad (22) and Mohammad Azizul (32) were arrested from Hazrat Nizamuddin on December 10 and 12 respectively for staying in India without valid documents. The police said that both of them have been submitted to the Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for deportation proceedings.
On December 13, DCP (South East Delhi) Ravi Kumar Singh had said that out of 916 people who passed verification in Southeast Delhi, eight illegal immigrants were detained, six of whom were from Bangladesh.
The police conducted an operation in E-44 slum of Naya Seemapuri of Shahdara to identify illegal immigrants on 12th of November. Shahdara DCP Prashant Priya Gautam said that the police team went to many slums and collected the documents of 32 people for further verification.
