Twelve children and one Ayah from an Anganwadi in Ponnurunni East Division of Kochi Corporation complained of food poisoning-like symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea due to allegedly contaminated water.
The incident took place on Thursday (December 19) but only came to light on Saturday (December 21). According to reports, three parents were also affected.
After receiving the report, the officials of the health wing of the corporation inspected the Anganwadi and surrounding areas. “Though the Anganwadi and its premises were clean, the water kept in the overhead tank was found to be contaminated. We have sent water samples for testing,’ they said. It is said that the contaminated water was used to cook food for the children of the Anganwadi.
Besides this, another water sample was also sent to the laboratory of the health department on the initiative of the doctor of the primary health center near the Anganwadi.
When asked why the incident went unnoticed for two days, Divisional Councilor Deepin Dilip said that the families of the victimized children thought it was a problem that only affected them.
Although the Anganwadi has been operational since Friday, it will open only after the Christmas holidays.
