The air quality index was recorded as ‘very poor’ in several areas of the national capital.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital remained in the ‘very poor’ category on Sunday, with a thin layer of fog covering parts of the city and limiting visibility. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI in the national capital was 388 at 7 am on Sunday. On Saturday, the AQI in Delhi was recorded at 398, according to the CPCB.
The air quality index was recorded as ‘very poor’ in several areas of the national capital. AQI was recorded at 384 at ITO, 372 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, 354 at DTU, 372 at IGI Airport (T3), 381 at DU North Campus at 7 am on Sunday. However, in several areas the AQI remained in the ‘severe’ category with 411 in Alipur, 427 in Anand Vihar, and 408 in RK Puram. An AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor and 401-500 severe.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius on Sunday. As temperatures plummeted, people sought shelter in night shelters in the national capital. A rider from Noida said that it was a problem to drive when entering Delhi due to pollution.
“I ride my bike on Sundays and once a day. So I used to ride a lot from Noida and was feeling good there. As soon as I entered Delhi my eyes started burning and foggy. I need to take it. Helmet mirrors are often broken and a lot of trouble here in Delhi. Six,” he told ANI.
Another rider said he had breathing problems while entering Delhi from Noida. “I ride every Sunday. When I entered Delhi from Noida, I felt the pollution is increasing here. I am having a lot of trouble breathing and riding my bike because I have to take off my helmet,” he told ANI. GRAP Phase IV measures are effective across NCR from December 16 following deterioration in air quality.
