Who is Pratap Sarangi? A BJP MP was injured during the clash in Parliament

A doctor said that his blood pressure and anxiety level were high when he was brought to the hospital.

Two BJP MPs, including Pratap Sarangi, suffered head injuries in a clash between opposition and NDA members in Parliament premises on Thursday. They were admitted to the ICU of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi. Sarangi is injured on the left side of his forehead. “Sarangi was bleeding profusely. She had a deep cut on her forehead and had to be stitched. Her blood pressure and anxiety levels were high when she was brought in,” said a doctor.

Who is Pratap Sarangi?

He is a famous leader of BJP in Odisha. He is currently an MP from Balasore constituency in the eastern state. His full name is Pratapchandra Sarangi. 69-year-old Sarangi was born in Gopinathpur village in Balasore district in 1955.

Sarangi was elected as MLA from Nilagiri constituency in Odisha, serving two terms from 2004 to 2009 and 2009 to 2014. In 2014, Sarangi contested Lok Sabha elections from Balasore constituency but lost. He contested the elections again in 2019 and won by defeating the incumbent Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Ravindra Kumar Jena. He was re-elected as MP from his current seat.

Sarangi graduated in Arts from Fakir Mohan College affiliated to Utkal University. His political journey began as a volunteer for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He later served in Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal. In May 2019, Mr. Sarangi was appointed Union Minister of State (MoS) for the Ministry of MSME and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.

What happened in the parliament?

Former Minister Pratap Chandra Sarangi was injured in the clash between opposition and NDA MPs in the Parliament premises over the alleged insult of BR Ambedkar. The BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of pushing a senior member, a charge the Congress leader denied.

The controversy erupted after BJP MPs protested against using the space left vacant on one side of the Makardwar staircase, which is used by members to enter and exit the building, to enter Parliament.

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said that BJP MP Mukesh Rajput was also injured in the clash. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Sarangi and Rajput, who were injured in the Parliament premises, and inquired about their health, sources said.
