On Thursday, Modi wished Mallya on his birthday, writing, “Wishing you a very #happybirthday my friend #VijayMalya – life has certainly seen its ups and downs. This too shall pass. May next year be your year. May you love and Surrounded by laughter. Big big hugs.”
Responding to the wish, Mali wrote, “Thank you my dear friend… both of us have been wronged in the country we tried to contribute to.” Mallya called Modi his “dearest friend” and his reply triggered a sea of reactions on social media platform X.

Seeing the friendly conversation between the two Indian fugitives, netizens expressed anger at X. One of them wrote, “Chor chor mousere bhai”. Another user advised him not to side with Lalit Modi and wrote, ‘Sir Ye thora zayada ho gaya…don’t side with other criminals but focus on getting yourself out of this mess.
Another scolded him, saying, “What about the employees who contributed to your airline and you treated them unfairly… what did you contribute?” Another showed his anger and wrote, “Wrong? You stole our hard earned money and broke our trust. What else do you get?”
Another user shared a GIF reading “Na Fikar, Na Sharam, Na Lihaaz”. Another user used a GIF depicting a scene from a Bollywood movie, “Kuch Toh Lihaj Karo.”
A user literally questioned Mallya and wrote, “Bhaga why first ye jabab do.”
Mallya fights the label of economic criminal
Fighting his label as an economic criminal in a series of posts on X a day ago, Vijay Mallya wrote, “Debt Recovery Tribunal decided KFA loan of ₹ 6203 crore with interest of ₹ 1200 crore. Until ED and banks legally how they cannot judge that they have borrowed more than twice, I am entitled to relief which I will pursue”.
His claim came in response to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s announcement in Parliament that through the ED, banks had recovered Rs 14,131.60 crore from him against a judgment loan of ₹ 6203 crore and that he was a financial offender.
Mallya’s post also received an angry response. One user wrote, ‘You will pay for your sins Vijay Mallya. If you ever enter India, you will face charges of fraud, as many families have suffered hardship because of your decision…”
Another called him a “duffer” and cited the number of frauds and scams he had committed, along with a pdf of the FATF report, he wrote, “Rs 14,000 crore + recovered. FATF report states. Stop lying.”
