Members of various Dalit organizations burnt copies of the Manusmriti in Hubballi on Wednesday to mark the 97th anniversary of the destruction of a copy of the text by BR Ambedkar, the framer of the Constitution.
The program was organized by Samata Sena Karnataka, Street Vendors’ Association, Leather Workers’ Association, various Dalit organizations and Federation of Organizations and Pragatisheel Sangh at Durgad Baill.
The participants celebrated text burning day as an awareness program against Manu ideology, casteism and superstition.
Demonstrating and chanting slogans at the Durgad Bell, the participants then burnt a copy of the Manusmriti to commemorate Ambedkar’s destruction of the text at a women’s conference in 1927.
Leading the demonstration, Gurunath Ullikashi, Bulla Shet, Suvarna Kallakuntala, Basavaraj Teradal, Manjanna Ullikashi, Ravi Kadam, Praveen Nadakatti and others from Samata Sena Karnataka said that burning the text is a symbol of protest against discrimination in the name of Ambedkar. of caste and gender.
They said that Manusmriti has given justice to an exploitation-free society by maintaining Varnashram and burning the text is a symbol of burning the history of exploitation.
He said that despite the changing times, the exploitation of Dalits continues in various ways and this incident should remind everyone that the fight started by Baba Saheb should be continued, as the divisive forces are organizing it, now this fight has become more decisive.
