Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday (Dec 18, 2024) tightened security ahead of the Congress’ proposed “siege” of the state assembly, with party leaders claiming they were being put under “house arrest”.

In Amethi, Congress district chief Pradeep Singhal claimed that he was under house arrest along with more than 100 party leaders and officials.

“All 17 block presidents, office bearers, leaders of front organizations and committee members of the district have been placed under house arrest,” he said. Press Trust of India (PTI).

Sinhal said that the action of the police was undemocratic and reprehensible and said, ‘Every citizen has the right to speak in a democracy. It is the voice of the Congress people that the deaf and blind government is trying to suppress. The government is scared, tries to use the police.”

An official notice issued to Congress General Secretary (Organization) Anil Yadav in Lucknow under Section 168 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNS) after the alleged house arrests, warned of legal action against party workers. Impeding law and order.

A notice issued by the Hussainganj police station stated that a large group of Congress workers led by Dinesh Kumar Singh proposed to march to the Legislative Assembly in Lucknow on Wednesday (December 18) to protest against the government’s policy.

“Tomorrow (Wednesday, December 18) we will besiege the Legislative Assembly demanding justice for Sambhal victims, food prices for farmers and unemployment. See how the dictatorial government is trying to suppress our voices by issuing notices,” Mr Yadav said in a post on X along with a photo of the police notice. .

In Amethi, Mr Singhal accused the Yogi Adityanath government of suppressing dissent, claiming the administration was trying to silence the truth.

“Congress workers had planned to go to Lucknow to question the government about unemployment, rising prices, bulldozer operations, atrocities against women and weak law and order situation. But instead of giving answers, we have been detained,” he said. .

“This is an atrocity and it shows the government’s fear. We will not be intimidated. We will ensure that people’s voice reaches the Assembly on December 18,” he added.

The winter session of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has started on Monday (December 16).
