Two criminals allegedly involved in a robbery at Indian Overseas Bank’s Chinhat branch in Lucknow were killed in separate encounters with the Lucknow and Ghazipur police, officials said on Tuesday.
Sovind Kumar, 26, was killed in an encounter with Lucknow police near Kisan Path, while Sunny Dayal, 28, was killed by Ghazipur police and a SWAT surveillance team in a separate encounter, they said.

On Monday, police stopped two vehicles near Laulai village in Chinhat area based on a tip-off. After one of the suspects opened fire on the police team, there was retaliatory firing. He said that Sovind Kumar was shot and later died.
According to Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, Dayal, who carried a bounty of Rs 25,000 on his head, was killed in a joint operation by Ghazipur’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and Gahmar police.
According to the police, they tried to stop two people who came on a motorcycle near the Bara police station during a regular check. However, the suspects tried to flee towards the Bihar border. A chase ensued, and the suspects were stopped near Qutubpur, where they abandoned their vehicle and opened fire on the police.
“In response, the police shot Sunny Dayal, while the second suspect fled under the cover of darkness. Sunny was taken to the Community Health Center and later referred to Ghazipur District Hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” the DGP said.
According to police, 32 bore pistol, 35 thousand 500 cash and stolen silver jewelery were recovered from him.
Indian Overseas Bank’s Chinhat branch was robbed on Sunday. The branch manager Sandeep Singh informed that the thieves entered the bank by breaking the wall from the adjacent vacant land and stole goods from about 40 lockers.
In a statement, the bank called the incident a “regrettable security breach despite stringent measures” and assured full cooperation with authorities.
Earlier on Monday, the police arrested three people involved in the robbery. They are Arvind Kumar (injured), Balaram and Kailash from Bihar. They were arrested near Laulai village.
Four friends including Sovind Kumar, Sunny Dayal, Mithun Kumar and Bipin Kumar Verma managed to escape initially.
