After batsman Nathan McSweeney was dropped from Australia’s squad following his recent struggles against India, former England player Michael Vaughan said the 25-year-old could return to the team in the future as a middle-order batsman.
“I look at McSweeney and I don’t think there’s any player who has had a tougher start to his career. I feel for the kid, because I’ve seen all the guys that have come through Test cricket in 10 years, I don’t think anyone has been given a tougher challenge. To face Bumrah in the conditions he’s in now, in his second game under pink ball lights, it did all kinds of things in Perth and the ball was spinning in Brisbane,” Vaughan told Fox Sports.
“I thought they would go to Melbourne with McSweeney, and if he failed again, they would bring Sam (Constas) to the SCG for his home Test. I don’t think it will be a bad thing for McSweeney in the long run. I think he will become Australia’s Test cricketer. , but I don’t think he’ll be at the top of the order. I think it’ll be at four or five o’clock. If I’m McSweeney, the next time I get a chance to wear baggy green, I’ll have him “I feel for Nathan, I think he’ll be back – but I completely understand why Australia made the move,” he added.
McSweeney has had a tough time facing Jasprit Bumrah in the ongoing Border Gavaskar series, getting out 4 times in 6 innings. He did not do well with the bat either, scoring 10, 0, 39, 10 not out, 9 and 4 in his 6 innings.
As a result, he lost his place in the squad after the selectors decided to play teenager Sam Konstas for the next two Tests.
