According to Dimple, smoothies may actually be destroying your gut health. “When you blend fruit for a smoothie, you’re destroying fiber,” she says. A study found that over 30-40% of the fiber is destroyed when fruits are mashed. This means it will only lead to an increase in sugar spikes and sugar overload. She adds, “When you eat a whole banana, it has a glycemic index (GI) of 45. However, when you blend a banana into a smoothie, it has a GI of around 60.” This causes more sugar spikes, weakens your liver, and increases your risk of pre-diabetes and obesity in the long run. When you blend a smoothie, you can add a lot of fruit at once—sometimes as many as 4 to 5 servings. Dimple says it can be too much and eventually takes a spike inside Blood sugar level.
What is the best way to consume fruit?
So, if mixing fruits into smoothies isn’t a good idea, how should you consume them? Dimple suggests that it is best to chew the fruit to get the most out of the fruit. She says, according to Ayurveda, smoothies are condemned because they are cold foods that dampen your agni – the digestive fire. When you chew fruits, you produce enough saliva, which helps in better nutrient absorption. Additionally, she suggests adding fruits the tea Seeds or nuts, because they are similar to fruits and help prevent blood sugar spikes. Dimple concludes by sharing the golden rule of consuming fruit: “Eat it alone or leave it alone!”
