The Supreme Court asked for a report from the corporation on waste management measures

The Kerala High Court has sought a report from the Kochi Corporation on the actions taken to clean the city’s drains and prevent accumulation and accumulation of plastic and other waste in drains, rivers and backwaters.

The court also directed the Secretary of the Local Self-Government Department to submit a detailed description of waste collection and management agencies, hospitals and bulk waste generators tracking and disposal methods from the local bodies.

The bench issued the order after there was a media report that poisoned food was being fed to children in an anganwadi in ward no. 48 Ponnarunni of the corporation.

The bench noted that television footage showed drains near the Anganwadi filled with garbage.

He added that it was a shame for the city to see such an accumulation of garbage. The court also noted the dumping of medical waste from Kerala in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.

A bench comprising Justices Bechu Kurian Thomas and P Gopinath described the dumping of waste generated in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu as alarming, highlighting that it was wanton and in violation of legal requirements.

They emphasized that such incidents should be prevented in the future.
