The President of Sri Lanka has arrived in India on his first foreign visit

New Delhi: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake arrived in India on Monday for his first foreign visit as head of state, vowing to improve relations between the neighbours.

The island nation’s leaders typically make their first visit to regional powerhouse India, which competes with China for influence in the Indian Ocean.

Leftist Dissanayake, who came to power in September on a promise to fight corruption, is expected to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi later on Monday.

Dissanayake said he had “productive discussions” with India’s finance and external affairs ministers and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

“Our talks focused on strengthening India-Sri Lanka economic cooperation, increasing investment opportunities, promoting regional security and advancing key sectors such as tourism and energy,” Dissanayake said in a statement.

“These engagements reaffirm our commitment to deepening the partnership between our two nations.”

New Delhi is worried about Beijing’s growing grip on Sri Lanka.

India has pushed infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka in recent years, but China is Sri Lanka’s largest bilateral lender.

Dissanayake is expected to visit Beijing in early 2025 for talks with Chinese leaders.

Sri Lanka faced its worst economic crisis in 2022 when it ran out of foreign currency to pay for essential imports such as food, fuel and medicines and defaulted on its $46 billion foreign debt.
