Mangaluru: A 47-year-old man from Mangaluru committed suicide holding MCC Bank chairman Anil Lobo responsible for his actions.
47-year-old Manohar Perera was living with his elder brother Melbourne Perera in a house bought in Permanki village about 10 years ago with a loan from MCC Bank. The house was foreclosed by the bank two years ago after Melbourne Perera was unable to pay the loan installments due to financial difficulties during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This caused deep mental anguish to Manohar Perera, who also suffered two heart attacks during this period. Later, in February 2023, Sister Christine from a charitable organization transferred Rs 15 lakh to Manohar Perera’s bank account. Using that amount, the deceased tried to pay off the loan and collect the house in coordination with MCC Bank chairman Anil Lobo. It is alleged that Anil Lobo withdrew Rs. 9 lakh from the deceased’s account through self-cheque, despite his efforts to repay it. Due to the pending payment of the outstanding amount of the loan, the deceased has been subjected to more mental pain.
About 6 months ago, the house was handed over to the family for their residence, but the financial burden remains.
Between 3:45 PM and 5:00 PM on 17 December, Manohar Perera committed suicide by hanging himself in his house. Before taking this step, he recorded a video on his mobile phone and circulated it to several groups and individuals on WhatsApp. In the video, speaking in Tulu, he accused MCC Bank chairman Anil Lobo and said, ‘Anil Lobo of MCC Bank is responsible for this. My account,” he alleged.
“Based on the complaint lodged by the brother of the deceased, a case has been registered at the Mangalore Rural Police Station for an offense punishable under Section 108 of the Indian Code of Justice, 2023. A detailed investigation is underway to prove the allegations and establish the facts surrounding the incident.
