The government has ordered a probe into alleged price discrimination in ride-hailing apps

Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi said on Thursday that he will investigate ride-hailing apps that allegedly charge different fares for the same ride on Android and Apple devices.

“This prima facie appears to be an unfair business practice,” Joshi wrote on X, formerly Twitter, calling it a “blatant disregard” for consumers’ right to transparency.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has been directed to conduct a detailed investigation and submit a report at the earliest. The research will expand to other areas including food delivery and ticket booking apps.

“ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CONSUMER EXPLOITATION!” Joshi added.

The research follows media reports highlighting price disparities between mobile platforms for the same journey.
