Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 17 Indian fishermen from Rameswaram

On Tuesday (December 24, 2024) morning, 17 Indian fishermen in two boats from Rameswaram were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy near Kachatheu.

Sources said that out of 383 boats that entered the sea on Monday (23 December 2024), two boats and their 17 fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy for crossing the international maritime boundary line.

Eight Fishermen – F. Irudayam (59), f. Arokia Doss (44), R. Anthoniar Adimai (64), a. Rongansian (53) and N Munindi of Thanganchimadam; Ramanathapuram’s K. Jeganathan (60) and N. Raman (52); and M. of Rameswaram. Ramachandran (40) – One boat and nine fishermen – A. Bundi Raj (38) Rameswaram, Rt. Amalraj, A. Kirubakaran (56), K. Arul Dinakaran (24), J. Madhavan (24) 22), J. Anthony Isaac (19) and A. David (50) Thangachimadam; D. of Pamban. Jacob (35); and S. Karthikeyan (27) of Rameswaram – were seized by the Sri Lankan Navy from another boat.

Sources said that the arrested fishermen have been handed over to Thalaimannar Fisheries Department.
