President Draupadi Murmu on Monday (December 23, 2024) condoled the death of veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal and said that his demise marks the end of a glorious chapter in Indian cinema and television.

Mr. Murmu said that Mr. Benegal started a new kind of cinema and made many classics.

“A true institution, he nurtured many actors and actresses. His extraordinary contribution was recognized with numerous awards including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan. My condolences to his family members and his countless fans,” the President said. Posted on X.

Mr. Benegal, who ushered in a new era in Hindi cinema through the ‘Parallel Movement’ in the 1970s and 1980s.Ankur”, “Mandi“and”churning“, died on Monday in a Mumbai hospital after battling chronic kidney disease. He was 90 years old.
