In a joint operation in Tripura, security officials on Friday night arrested and recovered 3.9 lakh Yaba tablets, generic names for the drug methamphetamine and caffeine, from Gandachara, a common area outside Teliamura town.
The Assam Rifles, Customs Department and Tripura Police jointly conducted the operation, officials said, which also led to the arrest of Rakesh Mia, 33, of Melaghar, who security officials said was the alleged transporter. Its price in the international market is around Rs 78 crore.
The news of this drug seizure came a day when Union Home Minister Amit Shah was addressing a plenary session of the Northeast Council in Agartala and spoke about how the northeastern states have become a corridor for drug smuggling that needs to be plugged.
In a statement issued by the Assam Rifles, officials said further investigations were underway to “dismantle the network behind this consignment”.
“The seizure of such a large quantity of drugs is a testament to the unparalleled dedication and intelligence capabilities of our forces,” said a senior officer involved in the operation.
“Yaba tablets, notorious for their devastating effects on individuals and communities, are a popular favorite of drug syndicates targeting vulnerable populations. This historic success highlights the unwavering commitment of the security forces to combat the menace of cross-border drug trafficking and protect the youth of the region,” the Assam Rifles statement added. .
