Visakhapatnam:The retaining wall of a house collapsed in Peda Gantyada Housing Board Colony in Gajuwaka area here on Friday due to incessant rain due to low pressure system formed in Bay of Bengal.
Incessant rains drenched Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvatipuram and ASR districts for the second day, affecting normal life.
GVMC Commissioner Sampath Kumar along with other officials rushed to the spot and advised the residents of the area to move to a safe place immediately. They were taken to temporary shelters and provided with food, drinking water and other essentials.
GVMC and revenue officials alerted residents living in hilltops, terai areas and old buildings. A house was destroyed in Gajuwaka during the July rains. Although there were no human casualties in both the incidents, people fled their homes in panic.
About two and a half lakh people are living in hill houses in different areas of the city.
The storm caused by low pressure has also destroyed the wall of the park in the middle of RK.
Meanwhile, a well-known low pressure area over West Central and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal has turned into a depression and is moving northeastward as a ‘deep depression’ off the AP coast. It is likely to weaken but there will be rain over north coastal AP on Saturday, the weather office said.
