A lamp made of coffee ground composite, a purse made of kombucha leather instead of animal skin, a toaster-typewriter that cuts letters into bread—these are some of the works seen at the sixth edition of ‘Kachcha Collaborative 2024’. A one-day design exhibition was inaugurated on Thursday at the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Center in Gandhinagar.
Exhibitor and fourth-year student at the Faculty of Design, CEPT University, Ahmedabad, Janhvi Aggarwal explored the aesthetic of kombucha skin in a lamp, for her creation. Another participant and Agrawal’s classmate, Arjav Grover, shared about his self-standing lamp made from coffee ground composite, saying: “By using coffee ground composite in everyday products, I have turned waste that is often overlooked into a product that enriches production and interior spaces.”
Vishwa Bhatt, one of the three founders of Kacha Collaborative, said: “The sixth edition of Kacha Collaborative is different because this time the scale is bigger and for the first time a platform for students – Kacha Foundry – has been launched. “
Bhatt added, “Our partnership with Orange Tree was formed because our views on regenerative design align.”
Creative works of 10 budding designers will be presented in the exhibition. “Kachcha Foundry is a platform for students, to give them an opportunity to showcase their talent,” said Tanvi Kariya, founder of Kachcha Collaborative.
“In a world with limited resources where regenerative designs are the need of the hour, we aim to encourage and hopefully develop a mindset where nothing is wasted but reused and recycled,” said Orange Tree founder Gaurav Jain.
