Almost five months after the death of Shakuntala of Nayagaon, the Mohali police have registered a case against her elder son Nitin Sarna in the industry of murder. An FIR has been registered based on the complaint filed by his younger son Naman Sarna, who lives in Australia.
In his complaint, Naman has alleged that his mother died under suspicious circumstances on July 21 without any previous health condition. He said that at 8 am that day, his elder brother Nitin informed him that he had died. Naman claimed that he requested Nitin to delay the cremation so that he could attend the last rites. At first Nitin agreed but later started cremating him without his consent.
According to the complaint, Naman contacted Amar Sidhu and Puneet Kumar, friends of his in-laws, to reach the crematorium in Sector 25, Chandigarh. “My friends intervened and stopped the cremation, as I informed Nitin through a video call that the cremation should not proceed until I return to India. The body was then kept in the Derabasi Civil Hospital mortuary,” said Naman.
However, Naman has claimed that Nitin took the body out of the mortuary in the morning of June 23 and cremated it without informing him.
Naman said that his mother had made a will in his favor two years ago and Nitin came to know about it only in January 2024. “The relationship between my mother and Nitin and his wife Rosie was strained since 2013. My mother also mentioned this in her will. As the years went by, their relationship deteriorated and Nitin continuously harassed her due to financial reasons,’ said Naman.
He alleged that Nitin, Rosy and many members of Rosy’s family, his parents and maternal uncle’s relatives were involved in his mother’s murder.
Following Naman’s complaint, the police conducted a preliminary investigation and registered a case against Nitin Sarna under Section 103 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Naigaon police station. The investigation is ongoing.
