ONDC to see 7x-8x transactions by Dec 2025 vs Dec 2024: MD Koshy

The government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce expects its transaction levels to grow 7 to 8 times from existing levels by December 2025.

The number of transactions has tripled since last December, ONDC MD and CEO Thampi Koshy said at a media roundtable at the launch of the network’s upcoming white paper, “Driving Digital Inclusion: Open Networks and Zero Commission Mobility Apps.”

The network, which went live in January 2023, initially launched with categories such as mobility, food and grocery. However, mobility continues to be an important segment with a 40% contribution to the total, which is an average of about 15 million transactions on the network.

There are about 40 buyer-side applications gaining traction with consumers that are in the early stages of adoption. Of these, around 20 are processing over 1,000 transactions daily. Twelve of them handle more than 20,000 transactions a day, Koshy added.

Although it started as a ridehailing platform, it has now expanded beyond ridehailing to include transit, buses and metros.

Cochin Metro and Chennai Metro are already doing around 2,000 transactions each day.

“Many major metros will go live in the next three to six months, which is an example of how the mobility pie will expand significantly,” noted Nitin Nair, Senior Vice President – South India Logistics Mobility Transportation & Travel. ONDC.

ONDC, which enables small businesses to harness the power of ecommerce, also plans to focus on building multimodal solutions, which refers to looking beyond vehicle hailing for transportation between two points to provide a travel ecosystem to consumers. is resolved end to end.

Multimodal transactions on the platform are more complex, as they involve three or more modes of transportation. The proposal is still in its early stages and is expected to take some time to ramp up, Nair explained.
