Noted Malayalam writer and filmmaker MT Vasudevan Nair passed away at the age of 91

The literary world mourned the passing away of renowned Malayalam writer, screenwriter and filmmaker Madath Thekkepattu Vasudevan Nair today in Kerala. Popularly known as MT, he was a towering figure in Indian literature and cinema, whose profound narrative and emotional storytelling left an indelible impression on generations of readers and viewers.

The 91-year-old was diagnosed with a heart attack and was in critical condition at a private hospital in Kozhikode. “He was receiving intensive medical care to improve his heart function and stabilize his vital signs,” the hospital said in a statement.

Born in 1933 in Kudallur, Kerala. MT’s works were captured The ethos of Malayali society, often weaves complex stories of human relations, cultural dilemmas, and post-independence Kerala’s struggle for survival.

In a career spanning more than seven decades, MT has authored nine novels (one co-authored with friend and fellow author NP Muhammad), 19 collections of short stories, more than 50 film scripts, six directorial ventures, three travelogues, one play, and numerous essays and memoirs.

His masterpiece Randamoozham (Second Turn)A retelling of the Mahabharata, through Bhima’s eyes, is a monument to his mastery of reimagining traditional stories with unparalleled depth and sensitivity.

At the age of 20, he won the award for the best short story in Malayalam at the World Short Story Competition. New York Herald Tribune.

His novels include Set in a Matriarchal Family in Kerala naluketu-For which he won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award at the age of 25- penand Asuravithuwhich continues to resonate deeply with readers around the world.

As a screenwriter and director, MT contributed masterpieces to Malayalam cinema Nirmalayam, Oru Vadakkan Viragadhaand tighten upBlending literary flair with visual storytelling. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary honor, as well as the National Film Award and the Central Sahitya Akademi Award.
