The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) completed the first phase of construction of the Bal Thackeray memorial at Shivaji Park, officials said on Wednesday.
The mayor’s residence in Dadar, which took over the project in the first phase, has been preserved and converted into a museum.
In addition to this, the construction of the entrance building, administrative building and interpretation center has also been completed.
The interpretive center with an area of ​​about 1,530.44 square meters has an art gallery, library and toilets.
Sources said that the Thackeray Memorial Trust will decide the official date for opening the memorial to the public.
The deadline for completing the first phase was May 2022.
The MMRDA appointed M/s Abha Narayan Lamba Associates as the consultant and Tata Projects Limited as the contractor for the first phase of the project, which is estimated to cost Rs 180.99 crore.
The second phase involves equipping the memorial with modern technology – laser shows, digital mapping projections, storytelling, movies, virtual reality, audio visual and technical components.
Various photographs depicting the journey of the Shiv Sena founder will be displayed at the Mayor’s residence building.
Consultant Lamba Associates has been appointed for the second phase of the project, and the process of appointing a contractor is in progress, MMRDA officials said.
