Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh on Wednesday (December 25, 2025) said the state, which has been in the grip of communal violence since May last year, urgently needs peace and appealed to the two communities to reach an understanding.

Speaking at the Good Governance Day program at the state BJP headquarters here, Singh asserted that the saffron party can save the northeastern state as it believes in the idea of staying together.

“There are many reasons for what is happening in Manipur today. Those who want to divide the state today are asking what the government is doing… They are power hungry,” Mr Singh said.

The Chief Minister said several initiatives like ‘Miyamgi Numeet’ (People’s Day) have been rolled out with the aim of bringing people and officials closer.

“We are not against any particular community. BJP’s stand is clear. We believe in the idea of living together. We have already started building a relationship between police and people,” he said.

Mr. Singh said that the state government is working hard to meet the needs of internally displaced persons by forming committees at various levels of administration.

He claimed that the administration is immediately resolving the displaced people in education and agriculture.

“We have never done anything wrong. We just want to save the future generation. The two communities need to be calm. Instead of looking at the past, we need to focus on the upcoming NRC process, biometrics capture and 1961 as the base year. Inner Line Permit.

“We will continue our work democratically and constitutionally. It will take time. What we need now is immediate peace and understanding between the two communities who have misunderstood each other,” Mr Singh said.

More than 250 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in communal violence between the Meitis and Kuki-Jo groups in Manipur since May last year.

“Only BJP can save Manipur…BJP leaders have a high sense of nationalism and social justice. They do politics based on reality in the interest of the nation…If BJP doesn’t give me ticket, I will. Stay with the party,” Singh added.

He also mentioned some unity-themed projects of the BJP government, and said, “Ekta Mall will include stalls of all castes in the state and will be constructed at a cost of over Rs 140 crore”.
