A man named Avnish Kumar was on his way to school in Bihar’s Begusarai district when he was abducted by a dozen unidentified men who stopped the e-rickshaw he was sitting in.

Men in two Scorpios abducted him at gunpoint and got him married to a woman he was allegedly in a relationship with for the past four years, NDTV reported.

According to a news channel report, Kumar had recently cleared the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) exam to become a teacher.

Meanwhile, this is yet another example of ‘pakdawa marriage’ – a phenomenon in which unmarried men are forced to marry women at gunpoint. According to the police, 2024 saw the highest number of forced marriages in the last 30 years.

What is the case?

According to a report by NDTV, Avnish Kumar was abducted by the relatives of a woman Gunjan from Lakhisarai district. Kumar and Gunjan were in a relationship for the past four years.

But, as per the allegations, when Kumar cleared the BPSC exam, she refused to make their relationship official. On the other hand, Gunjan has alleged that their relationship is serious.

“He promised to marry me and start a family. He even took me to his school. We were in love for four years. But when I informed my family about this and we approached him for marriage, he refused. Unacceptable”, Gunjan claimed, as quoted by the publication.

Avinsh denies his relationship with Gunjan

Avneesh has alleged that he has no relationship with that woman. “I had no love for that girl. She harassed me by calling and stalking me repeatedly. On the day of the incident, some people kidnapped me in a Scorpio car while I was going to school. They beat me, forced me to wear vermilion, and tried to perform rituals. , I protested throughout,” he said.

Moreover, when Gunjan reaches Avnish’s house after the forced marriage, her family refuses to accept her as a daughter-in-law.

Both sides have lodged complaints with the police demanding justice.
