Mallikarjun Kharge slams Amit Shah for ‘insulting’ Ambedkar, says BJP is spreading lies | India news

Calling for an organizational restructuring of the party, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday warned that the BJP and the RSS have not given up their efforts to change the constitution.

At an extended meeting of the CWC in Belagavi, Karnataka, to commemorate 100 years since Mahatma Gandhi became the president of the Indian National Congress, Kharge said everyone in the party was proud of the Mahatma’s legacy.

He said that when Gandhi was the Congress president for only one year, he set such a high standard that it was impossible for anyone to match it.

Kharge also accused Union Minister Amit Shah of making “disparaging remarks about Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar”. He said that there is widespread anger among the public about the expression. The Congress President said that 2025 will be the ‘year of strengthening and strengthening the party’.

Referring to the 1924 Belagavi session of the Congress, Kharge said it set new standards and milestones. “We must honor the legacy of Gandhi, Nehru and Ambedkar, moving forward with courage and determination. This Navsatyagraha meeting is a call to defend truth, justice and constitutional values,” he added.

Kharge also said that BJP leaders “spread the lie that Babasaheb Ambedkar was ill-treated by the Congress”.

He said, “It was the Congress government under the leadership of Mrs. Indira Gandhi, which erected a huge statue of Babasaheb in Parliament in 1967.”

Congress Parliamentary Party president Sonia Gandhi, who was unable to attend the CWC meeting on Thursday, sent a note to party leaders, saying that Mahatma Gandhi’s “legacy of those in power in New Delhi and the ideology that nurtured them and is under threat from institutions”.

“Today, we rededicate ourselves to protect, preserve and promote the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. He was and will continue to be our fundamental source of inspiration. It was he who molded and guided all our remarkable galaxy of leaders of that generation,” she said in her note.

She also condemned “organizations that never fought for our freedom”. “They strongly opposed Mahatma Gandhi. They created a toxic environment that led to his murder. They praise his killers,” she said.
