Hyderabad: Recreational facilities such as parks, seating areas and walking tracks developed by GHMC under the flyover have become popular community spaces. However, lack of dedicated parking facilities at these sites is causing inconvenience to the users of these facilities as well as the motorists.
Visitors to the basketball courts and food courts built under the KPHB flyover have to park their vehicles on the roadside and pay fines for unauthorized parking. Some are parking in nearby shopping malls to avoid traffic fines.
when Deccan Chronicle When contacted, a GHMC official said, “The unused U-turn near the KPHB flyover closed by the traffic police has been identified as a parking area for a sports complex. The GHMC has requested permission from the traffic police to convert this place into a parking zone.”
A parking lot was initially proposed at Chandrayangutta flyover. However, due to the extreme traffic jam, the traffic police has requested the GHMC to identify an alternative location for parking.
Akhtar Mirza, who parked his car under the flyover, said, “I use the space for parking frequently, but after the work is done, the car will be parked in the officially allotted space in Falkanuma.”
Similarly, Shackpet flyover also lacks designated parking space provided by GHMC, though rest areas and walking tracks have been developed under this flyover. DV Chari, a resident of OU Colony, said, “Parks without adequate parking spaces are not useful especially for pedestrians and those who come from a few kilometers away to use other facilities.”
Although the oxygen park constructed under the LB Nagar Kamineni flyover is in preparation for opening, there is no designated place for parking. Chandra Reddy, a resident of LB Nagar, said that GHMC’s idea of creating parks is useful, but if designated parking areas can be created along with parks, visitors will avoid traffic congestion.
