Kurla Best Bus Accident: Injured die, death toll reaches 8 | Mumbai News

A 55-year-old man, one of several people injured in a BEST bus accident in Kurla area here, died on Monday morning, taking the death toll to eight, a civic official said.

An electric bus hired by the civic-run Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) plowed into a crowd on a busy road in Kurla area on December 9, hitting seven people and injuring 42 others.

Several vehicles were also damaged in the incident.

One of the injured, identified as Fazlu Rahman, died during treatment at Sion Hospital on Monday morning, a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said.

BEST has formed a five-member committee to investigate the Kurla accident.

Driver Sanjay More (54) is in police custody on charges of careless driving.

In a statement issued last week, BEST said that a committee formed under the coordination of Chief Manager (Traffic) Ramesh Madavi will investigate the accident.

In addition, BEST said that the family of the deceased will bear two lakh rupees and the medical expenses of the injured.

The BEST administration claims that More received three days of training before being allowed to drive the electric bus.

RTO officials suspect that human error and lack of proper training to operate automatic transmission buses could be the cause of the accident, the worst in recent history involving BEST buses.
