Kozhikode court rejects hit and run suspect’s bail plea

Kozhikode Principal Sessions Court on Thursday (December 19, 2024) accused C. It refused to hear the anticipatory bail plea filed by Sajeel.

Writing the order, Justice VS Vindhukumari rejected the anticipatory bail on three grounds: fleeing the spot without stopping the car after the accident, destroying evidence and then buying documents to claim his vehicle’s insurance.

A 68-year-old woman from Thalassery, Baby, died on the spot in the accident that took place on February 17. His granddaughter Drishna, who was seriously injured, was in a coma for several months at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. A car hit the road while crossing the road around 10 pm

The absconding 36-year-old suspect went to Dubai on March 14. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) attached to the Kozhikode Rural Police identified the vehicle and the driver after a 10-month long investigation.

Crime Branch DSP (DSP) VV Beni, who headed the investigation, said a look-out notice had been issued against Shajeel and steps had been taken for his return to India from Dubai.

Initially, he was charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 304A (hasty act causing death by negligence or not culpable homicide). Later, the Nadapuram police added an additional offense of Section 463 (forgery) of the IPC against him for securing a fraudulent insurance claim, Mr. Benni said.
