Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood was ruled out of action after bowling just one over on the fourth day of the third Test at the Gabba and was later sent for scans.
“Josh Hazlewood reported calf awareness in this morning’s warm-up. He will be taken for a scan to assess the injury. Any updates will be shared in due course,” Cricket Australia said.
Hazlewood took the big wicket of Virat Kohli on the third day of the Test.
Hazlewood missed the Adelaide Test with a side injury but Australia insisted he was fit enough to play in Brisbane.
“Without question I think we will see Scott Boland at the MCG,” former England captain Michael Vann said on commentary.
“I’m not sure if he (Hazlewood) will bowl much, Mitchell Marsh can come and bowl some.
“He looks ginger, like he’s really struggling. He is returning liberally (and) he is not well. “
Former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has questioned the inclusion of Josh Hazlewood in the Gabba Test.
Brad Haddin said, “I’m not sure what will happen here with Jos Hazlewood.
“Andrew McDonald is over there asking Scott Boland to bowl some for Melbourne.”
Kerry O’Keefe said Australia had gone for the horses for course approach.
“Trying to look at Australia’s strategy, I think they should play it with Hazlewood and miss Melbourne,” O’Keefe said.
“Melbourne is his worst pitch in Australia by a long way and then Starc missed Sydney, which is his worst pitch in Australia.
“So I think they took into account that Australia would play it and that Boland, who loves the MCG, would come to Melbourne.
“And that might be the case right now anyway. The Boland numbers are inescapable.
“But the questions will be asked, was he (Hazlewood) fit for this game?”
