Family avoids funeral, community steps

Karimnagar: MeIn a poignant incident resembling a scene from the Telugu film Aa Naluguru, the last rites of 85-year-old Sadula Sattavva, a resident of Then Khani in Jagatial town, went unnoticed by family members who had once benefited from her generosity. . After her adopted sons did not allow her body to enter the house, the locals finally came to cremate her on Wednesday.

According to sources, after the death of her husband Laxman, Sattava was living alone for the past 20 years. Having no children of her own, she treated her husband’s elder brother’s sons Ravi and Prasad as her own. Sattava also divided her property between them, including her house and valuable land in the city. In return, both men took care of her every month.

Satav, who had been ill recently, died on Wednesday during treatment at a government hospital. His body was brought to his residence in an ambulance, only to remain locked outside for more than six hours. Family members, despite inheriting his property, were nowhere to be found. When questioned by the locals, the adopted sons said that the reason for their refusal to allow the body to enter the house or to organize a funeral was because of a marriage that was about to take place in their family.

The outraged neighbors informed the police that despite Sattva not being their biological mother, she treated the two men as her own children. The refusal to honor his last rites caused widespread shock and dismay. JAGTIAL TOWN CIRCLE INSPECTOR S. Venu said that sub-inspector Geeta Reddy advised Ravi and Prasad and warned that the authorities would consider confiscating Sattva’s property if they failed to fulfill their duties.

The police have registered a suo moto case against both Ravi and Prasad under relevant sections of the law.
