Delhi woke up to thick fog after the Air Quality Index (AQI) worsened to the ‘severe’ (448) category at 7 am on Thursday.
This is a slight increase from Wednesday’s AQI of 445, as the city remains under orange alert till Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting dense to very dense fog conditions.
The most polluted place was Nehru Nagar with 485 AQI, followed by Wazirpur at 482 AQI and visibility at IGI Airport was 600 meters till 7.30 pm. The city is experiencing perfect calm air, which is unfavorable for the spread of pollutants.
Following clean air in the first half of December, air quality deteriorated to critical levels in the second half due to adverse weather conditions including stagnant winds and low temperatures, the IMD said.
On Thursday, the minimum temperature in Safdarjung was 8 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was 23 degrees Celsius. According to the IMD forecast, the minimum temperature is expected to be around 5 to 8 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature will be around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius in the next six days. “Cold wave conditions are likely to prevail over major parts of northwest India during the next 5-7 days,” the IMD said.
According to the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, the air quality is expected to remain in the ‘severe’ category on Thursday and then remain in the ‘very poor’ category till Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and adjoining areas on Monday called for a Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) under Phase IV with immediate effect. As per revised GRAP Phase IV, all classes, except Class X and XII, shall be conducted compulsorily in physical and online modes, in Delhi and NCR districts of Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar.
Additionally, a ban on BS III petrol and BS IV diesel light motor vehicles, curfew for public offices and municipal bodies in Delhi and some NCR districts, and a ban on all demolition and construction activities have also kicked in to curb pollution. In the national capital.
