Building collapses in Mohali, many suspected trapped, NDRF deployed

Rescue operations are underway after a multi-storey building collapsed in Sohana village in Punjab’s Mohali district on Saturday (December 21, 2024), officials said. Locals suspect that some people were buried in the debris. The district administration office has started the rescue operation. Two excavators were pressed into service as part of the operation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has reached the spot.

Officials said that the fire department also participated in the operation. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “Sad news has been received that a multi-storied building has collapsed near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). The entire administration and other rescue teams have been deployed to the spot. I am in constant touch with the administration.”

“We pray that there is no loss of life, we will also prosecute the culprits. Appeal to the public to help the administration,” he added in his post on X. Efforts are being made to remove the debris as soon as possible. Lights have been arranged for rescue, he said. Local residents said that there was a loud noise when the building collapsed. According to preliminary information, the building collapsed after the basement was dug in the nearby area. Anandpur Sahib MP Malwinder Singh Kang and Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh also reached the spot. Singh said, ‘This is an unfortunate incident. The rescue operation is going on at a fast pace.”
