Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday (December 21, 2024) called for a nationwide protest on December 24 against Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks about Babasaheb Ambedkar.

In a series of posts on X, Mayawati said that Mr. Shah’s comments had hurt people’s hearts. “Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the author of the original book of the ultra-humanistic and welfare constitution for the self-respect and human rights of Dalits, deprived and other neglected people of the country, is revered as God. Amit Shah’s disrespect has hurt people’s hearts,” she said.

“People of all sections of the country are outraged, outraged by the words spoken in Parliament about such a great man. The Ambedkarist BSP has demanded that he withdraw his statement and repent, which has not yet been implemented. Mayawati said.

“In such a situation, if the demand is not met, the BSP has said that it will raise its voice all over the country, so now the party has decided to hold a nationwide protest on December 24 in support of this demand. On that day, a completely peaceful sit-in will be held in all the district headquarters of the country,” he said.

The BSP chief stressed that his party is dedicated to Babasaheb Ambedkar who fought throughout his life for Dalits/Bahujans to stand on their own feet and live with self-respect and got them many legal rights including reservation.

“Therefore, if Congress, BJP etc. cannot respect Baba Saheb wholeheartedly, they should not insult him. The day SC, ST and OBC categories got legal rights in the Constitution because of Baba Saheb, they also got heaven for seven lives,” he added. .

“If they (the opposition) had taken the name of God more times instead of Ambedkar, they would have got heaven for seven lives,” Mr Shah reportedly said in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi and other MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party led a demonstration on the Parliament premises demanding an apology and resignation of the Union Home Minister for his remarks. MPs from the Indian faction staged a protest at the Parliament premises when violence broke out between the two sides, injuring two BJP MPs. Two BJP MPs Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput sustained head injuries during the alleged violence in the Parliament premises. Both the parties have accused their party workers of pushing them around. Further, Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi in connection with the incident.
