Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 72nd Plenary Session of North East Council (NEC) at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala on Saturday (December 21, 2024).

Speaking about the development initiatives in the region, Mr. Shah said, “Prime Minister Modi has brought peace to the Northeast by signing 20 peace accords in 10 years. During this period, 9,000 insurgents have surrendered. He said the Center has allocated Rs 81,000 crore for rail connectivity and Rs 41,000 crore for road network in the Northeast region. “With the end of the insurgency in the Northeast, it is time to change the approach of the police force to ensure speedy justice to the people,” he added.

The event was also attended by Minister for North Eastern Region Development (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, Governors, Chief Ministers of all eight North Eastern states and senior officials.

“In addition to reviewing the progress of the Council’s work this year, there will be an in-depth discussion on the future roadmap for the region,” Mr. Scindia told reporters.

A delegation from Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is also likely to join the discussions, sources said on Friday (December 20, 2024).

Mr. Shah arrived in Tripura on Friday (December 20, 2024) to preside over the 72nd plenary session of the NEC.

The council is the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the North Eastern region comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
