Karimnagar: 43-year-old Kaytam Mallesham, who was in pre-trial detention, died of a sudden heart attack in the sub-jail of Jagtial on Thursday morning.
Police have identified Mallesham as sub-sarpanch of Ramannapet village in Maliala mandal. He has a wife, a son and a daughter.
Mallesham, who was arrested two weeks ago on charges of sexual assault following a woman’s complaint, was granted an extension.
Around 1.30 am, Mallesham reported severe pain in the heart. Considering his history as a heart patient who had undergone bypass surgery earlier, the police shifted him to a government hospital. Despite receiving treatment, he died in the hospital.
Mallesham’s family has accused the police of detaining him on false charges. They alleged that the police did not inform the police when they were admitted to the hospital and only after the death.
The family said that they are planning to file a case in court demanding that the police take action regarding the circumstances of Mallesham’s death.
