A Center of Excellence for Ceramics has been established in Rajasthan to promote the industry with exploration, mining, processing and world-class research. The preparation for the operation of the center has reached its final stage, and the provincial government has sought the help of educationists, technical experts and representatives of the ceramic industry to add value to its work.

Principal Secretary (Mines, Geology and Petroleum) T. Ravikant said here on Wednesday that the state has rich reserves of ceramic minerals like ball clay, silica sand, quartz, china clay and feldspar. “Rajasthan’s raw materials go to other states for processing, but there are plenty of employment opportunities and establishment of ceramic-based industries here,” he said.

Mr. Ravikant interacted with ceramic industry experts and stakeholders to invite their suggestions for developing the new center as an effective forum with robust operations. The vast reserves of ceramic minerals in the state will be exploited under the technical guidance of the Center for Mining, Processing and Manufacturing, he said.

The Department of Mines, Geology and Petroleum will soon send a team of officials to Kolkata’s Central Glass and Ceramics Research Institute (CGCRI) to study its work, which will help them form a core team here. Mr. Ravikant said that early identification will be done to ensure the utility of the services provided by the center from the first day of establishment.

A major area of intervention will be the exploration of silica minerals, which play a major role in the manufacture of products such as insulators used in power supply, sanitaryware products, tiles used in real estate, pottery, bricks, and semi-conductors.

Bikaner Technical University Vice Chancellor Ajay Sharma, Director (Mining) Bhagwati Prasad Kalal, CGCRI Principal Scientist PK Sinha and Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi Shantanu Das interacted with Mr. Ravikant and gave their suggestions. . (EOM)
