A team of doctors at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) has saved the leg of a 40-year-old woman who is on the verge of amputation following an attack.

RGGH Dean E Therani Rajan said the woman was injured when her son allegedly threw a heavy knife at her in her own home in the city.
Doctors at GRH referred the woman to RGGH for a vascular surgeon’s opinion. The patient was admitted to RGGGH, and doctors from the plastic surgery unit examined him in the emergency ward.
The patient was resuscitated and stabilized while emergency investigations were conducted. Doctors received opinions from all relevant specialties, and the patient was conscious and oriented with stable vitals during the initial evaluation.
Doctors discovered that the distal arm was held by soft tissue, and most of the tendons, two large nerves and a major blood vessel had been completely severed. Both the bones of the right hand are broken and a large vessel is injured. All the tendons in the back and front of the palm were also injured. His head was also severely injured.
The doctors rushed him to the operation theater and a team of three plastic surgeons, two anesthetists and orthopedics, besides 13 junior doctors, operated on him. In an eight-hour long operation, they stabilized the fracture, and reconstructed the injured tendons, blood vessels and nerves.
“All open wounds were sutured; Distal vascularity was confirmed and appropriate positioning was maintained before the patient was extubated and shifted to the intensive care unit,” said Dr Theerani Rajan.
“The patient is currently under the care of the Department of Plastic Surgery. Distal vascularity has been maintained and she is stable under constant monitoring by the plastic surgery team,” he added.
