A Congress worker died after being tear gas fired during a protest in Assam

Guwahati: A Congress worker was killed and several others injured during protests in Manipur on Wednesday against various issues including the unrest and bribery charges against the Adani group.

However, a senior police officer said that the actual cause of death will be known after the post-mortem report.

Police and Congress supporters clashed, with Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah and former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora falling to the ground and being detained.

Party spokesperson Bedbrat Bora said that Mridul Islam, a member of the Congress legal cell, was suffocated after a teargas cell fell near him.

“He was immediately rushed to a private hospital and then to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). He was declared brought dead there,” he added.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Digant Barah said, “Tear gas was not fired. Police fired only three cells on the road to release smoke and disperse people.”

Bora said that some journalists including senior journalist Amarendra Deka were injured and are undergoing treatment at GMCH.
