In one incident reported from Hawaii, a body was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines flight arriving in Maui, Hawaii, on Christmas Eve.
According to flight tracking website Flightware, the body was found on board Flight UA202, a Boeing 787-10 aircraft that landed on schedule in Hawaii.
“A body was found in the wheelwell of one of the main landing gears of a United plane after it arrived at Kahului Airport in Maui on Tuesday,” United Airlines said in a statement to CNN on Wednesday.
The airline added that the wheel was only accessible from outside the aircraft and “at this time, it is unclear how and when the person properly accessed the wheel”.
The Maui Police Department is also investigating the discovery of a body in the wheel well of a United Airlines flight. The airline is cooperating with law enforcement agencies, the statement said.
It is not clear how the body ended up in the plane’s wheelwell or how the man died, which is under active investigation.
The Federal Aviation Administration says that about 77% of people who have attempted illegal rides in the past have ended up dead.
