One dead, 66 rescued when boat capsizes

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that five to seven passengers are yet to be found.

One passenger has died and 66 have been rescued, while a search is on for others aboard a ferry that overturned off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday, police said. A police official said the boat, named Neelkamal, was on its way to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination near Mumbai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, five to seven passengers are yet to be traced.

He said that a small boat hit Neelkamal around 4 pm. The Navy and Coast Guard have launched a massive rescue operation, with 11 naval boats and three boats of the Marine Police and one boat of the Coast Guard deployed in the area, a defense official said. Officials informed that four helicopters were also involved in the search and rescue operation. Police, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority staff and fishermen from the area are also involved in the rescue operation, the official said.
