After facing backlash from the opposition over his remarks about Dr BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah at a press conference on Wednesday asked the media to report his comments in full, claiming that he came from a party that insulted Ambedkar’s legacy.
“My speech, which was clear and without any confusion, is on the Rajya Sabha record,” Shah said, defending himself against accusations from the Congress that he had insulted Ambedkar.
“The Congress distorted my comments about Ambedkar; I come from a party that can never insult him. The discussion on the Constitution did not answer the allegations leveled against Ambedkar, Savarkar and reservations by the Congress,” he said.
“BJP speakers established in Parliament that Congress is anti-Ambedkar, anti-reservation, anti-Constitution. Congress governments never built a memorial to Ambedkar, while BJP governments developed many sites related to him,” the home minister said.
Earlier, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had demanded the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah for ‘insulting’ Ambedkar and asked him to “apologise to the nation”, while Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien served a privilege notice against Shah. . And Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, claimed that those who support Manusmriti are inherently opposed to Ambedkar’s vision for society.
